Female Archer Pack 1 - Pose Reference by SenshiStock Female Archer Pack 1 - Pose Reference by SenshiStock
Important Notes:

I have no archery training; `jademacalla was kind enough to allow me to use his bow and give me some basic tips. Thus, these are probably not accurate references for a skilled archer. These photos were taken with a non-realistic approach to archery in mind; they are more geared to the magical and the fantasy. Please consider this when using them for reference.

Please refrain from making comments about the model's ability. I am already aware of the shortcomings of the technical aspects.

Download for the full files.

Funded through Kickstarter.

Big thanks to `jademacalla for the photography on these.

not bad at all. I actually wish i had you here for my next warrior shoot to play and archer
Ive done archery for years and mostly combat shooting (close range, quick reaction shooting) so while you are moving, dodging, and acquiring new targets your body is in all sorts of positions
anyway really enjoyed this set!

As an archer I feel it fair to comment: You look like you would be naturally talented at this sport judging simply by your pose, the biggest difficulties a beginner has you've pretty much knocked out. All I can advise maybe is to relax when drawing, gives a better artistic reference too ;) All the best, Ta

Very good work. But the first pose looks a little bit wrong. Im an archer and if you grab the bow like this you will loose your arrow or hurt yourself. You have to turn the bow to the other side. That looks better.

Always thought something like this but with the archer in several stages of drawing arrows from a traditional quiver might be nice (back and or belt quivers) and useful. I mean they always make that look so easy in the movies but its not that natural! ^_^'

I didn't even think of doing drawing poses, but that's a great idea. If I can get a hold of the stuff I need again, I will make a note of that.

If anybody in that "The Hobbit" movie uses a bow or if it just reminds all the fangirls of Legolas then your stock poses would be just in time! ;)

@@; As an archer, I'm kinda bothered by the arrow being notched incorrectly... And what's the poundage on this bow? It looks like you're having trouble doing a proper, full draw... 'Cause your back muscles, instead of your arm muscles, are the ones that should be working.

I LOVE your reference photos, and I do use them! But I'm also saddened by horrific archery in art...! If possible, I highly recommend getting in touch with a coach or instructor for photo shoots with weapons! I understand artistic/stylistic liberties, but life/believable pieces can look cool too!

Not even being sarcastic, but by all means, if you can or can at least guide someone else to do so, please do the community a favor and upload some believable archery stock photography. I certainly wouldn't mind some.

Definitely, bro. You have no idea how ecstatic I was when an archery coach critiqued some of the archery in Brave ([link]), The Hunger Games ([link]), and The Avengers ( [link] / [link] ). I understand fantasy will be fantasy, but it's much more compelling when drawn from a grounded understanding of reality, thus why I love stock photography for reference, especially when I need more than what Google images is showing me. I highly recommend the How to Draw - Real Action Pose Collection books (vol. 1 - [link]) because, due to their budget, they can afford better cameras, weapons, and trained martial artists to yield legit pictures to work with (holy crap they're on the pricey side though, but alas).

It's a real shame that I've yet to find an accessible collection of legit reference images for archery, however, so I probably will head out to the archery range and make my own collection, work with a coach, etc. It's gonna take a while to arrange and whatnot, and unfortunately most of the "models" will be clothed, but I just want the form/technique to be right...!

I second this comment (just saying)- I'm an archer too and the wrong form in art is hard to wrap my brain around coz I've been shooting for 9 years and it kinda ruins the rest of the visual for me.. Just being honest here.. Really not trying to start issues.. pwomise
