Okay, I'm making a journal for this like ~Laeneris did.
It is explaining to all of the people who come to my page from the 'have a good day' comments what's going on!
Well basically, I just decided I want to help spread the dA love, so I click on the random deviant button and comment on people's profiles to put a smile on their face, leaving them a comment telling them I hope they smile, have a good day, that luck comes their way, etc. I want people to feel welcomed on here because the Internet can be a scary place...

It's not to get pageviews/watchers or anything like that, it's just to make people happy which is really nice. Not only does it give the people a smile it gives me one too when I see a positive response

20 Years of Spider-Man ImprovementHey Friends--
I moved recently and things have been busy, so I won't be able to get a new comic up this week. I'm working hard on it right now though-- it's the biggest one so far-- the title of the essay is going to be: "Hug the Elephant." Please stay tuned!
In the meantime, I wanted to show you something special. I was digging through old sketchbooks while packing for the move and I found these little gems-- drawings of Spider-Man I made from age 6 onward. I've been drawing Spider-Man periodically for about 20 years!

When People Try to Use YouHey,
I just wanted to send this because it's always nice to be appreciated. Your comics are beautiful and I think that the even more important thing is that the advice you give is completely true. I have tried to find ways to explain the creative-process to my parents or friends who asked, "How can you come up with this stuff?" My answer had always been, "I don't know. I practice?" Comparing my answer to yours I feel rather stupid, but you have a wonderful turn-of-phrase and can clearly explain what most of us can't.
I do have one question for you, though, and I'm not entirely sure about how to go about solving the problem.
My parents and friends are really encouraging with my design work in school (I'm a New Media Designer), but I find that sometimes I end up being smothered by their help. They start suggesting ideas and offering every scrap of advice on colors and how I should design things. I do take their advice and perhaps make a few compositions and

Products- things you should considerSince I am recently mulling over my postcard set and fight with Iso and calibration and "uh, I have 3 mm cutting border plus 3 mm safe frame, now how much is 59-6 O_o" (it feels like being in 4th class again!) and get a lot of questions about the final thing.... and how doing products is done.
Some thoughts:
Before you decide you want to have product XY for a con or general sale, you have to check what you can actually do.
Auntie Google is ALWAYS your best friend for it. It's doesn't do any good if you ask me where I get my (locally made) products if you need information for Canada. Or... Hawaii. Or... Brasil. It also doesn't do any good if it's not even the best price and service YOU might get.
Things you should consider (this example is basically for PRINT):
- do I want to print locally?
- how much do I want to spend on the actual printing
- do I need extra software or help to get the data done (basically Photoshop and Indesign are always your best friends in that case)
- how much sh

I've been (quietly) following your cartoon essays for a while--I adore them and appreciate you sharing them.
I imagine you get a lot of emails from people asking about creative direction, their meaning in life, existential angst, etc. And I know you're a cartoonist and not a licensed therapist (although hey, I never claimed to know everything about you), but I was hoping you'd be able to help me.
I'm pursuing a career in comics. I *wish* I could say that I was attending the School of Visual Arts, the Art Center College of Design, etc., but those are rather cost-prohibitive. Instead my soul is being sucked out of me at a public university.
I'm aware that where I attend school isn't the end-all of what career I have and what level of success I reach, but I'm not learning what I want to learn. Currently in my drawing clas

The Need for Sustainable CreativityRecently, more and more research is coming to light that indicates talent is a matter of time spent practicing, not a matter of innate ability. The idea that it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to master a skill is increasingly gaining mainstream acceptance. Personally, I'm a big fan of the idea because it gives hope to people who once believed talent to be a gift they had not been given.
Even though this radical idea has massive ramifications for artists, I don't think it has properly made a debut in the dialogue about what it takes to become a great artist. We are still asking "How do you draw that?" when we should be asking "How do you get yourself to keep drawing for years and years and years?"
I believe making creativity a sustainable practice is one of the most important and difficult issues an artist deals with. My hope is that my comics become good fuel for thought and discussion and that my website Doodle Alley http://doodlealley.com/ becomes a platform where artists

An update on Sara AKA GloryAngel

A few years ago, strangers and friends on DeviantART were a huge help in raising some money for my pal

who was in a car accident that left her paralyzed but still able to feel her body - a condition known as locked-in syndrome. With help from DA we were able to raise thousands of dollars for Sara so that her mom could buy her a computer which she controls with her eyes in order to 'talk' to her caregivers and friends.

It's been 4 years since Sara's accident. She is still living at home with her mother and has nurses that care for her in home as well. She's got a sweet chair that she can be moved around the house in and her awesome mom renovated their bathroom. For a while she was posting on a blog but her communication with people online was fairly limited. Now she's getting good enough with the computers she uses so that she's now able to be on Facebook and interact with her friends and family online again. Her mom (who is awesome, have I mentioned that?!) is also looking at making Sara an EyeWriter so she might be able to draw again in some capacity! VERY COOL!

The latest news I wanted to share with you is about Sara's martial arts achievement! Before her accident, Sara had qualified for her black belt in Tae Kwan Do. She was recently able to completed the written part of the test and designed a kata. You can see a news article about her achievement here and here. I'm so proud of Sara and so happy that she continues to be a happy, active young woman.

Oh my god, I read the article about her receiving her black belt and it literally made me cry - I couldn't imagine being so brave in such a situation (though being someon who went through a lot troubles with her spine, having surgieries and almost landing in the wheel, I feel extra sensitive about topic of paralyzed people) - what an amazing, strong person she is. And the part that she was able to bow back, because now she can move her head and neck just a little made me speechless. It's amazing how strong this person is...
