I stick it on airplane mode at the time the announcements are made. I fly all the time. Heck, I even work at the airport (no, not for an airline though) and everything is just one smooth routine.

Considering that the last time I flew, mp3 players and smartphones didn't exist yet, and cell phones were bulky, it wouldn't have mattered much anyway.

But I did turn my discman off. I just plugged my headphones into the airplanes radio jack in the seats arm and listened to that during take off and decent.

I don't carry a watch, so I put everything in airplane mode until it's safe to use my items again. They are how I tell time.

I always try to finish up what I'm doing on whatever device before turning it off but I always turn it off. I don't know why they tell you to do certain things but if it helps the flight go smooth I will do anything. I don't want the pilot to miss something important because my cellphone or ds was on. I'm already freaking out about being on a plane!! Once a guy next to me had to be told various times to put away his iphone. I was so close to whacking him upside the head!!!!
